I guess it’s time we made this one since a select audience got to see the movie last night, time to be careful about spoilers.

So I read a review seems it follows a similar tact to ANH.

“You know all the spoilers in J.J. Abrams’ obsessive reboot — because you’ve seen this movie before”

We have known for months or years that “The Force Awakens” would be a massive worldwide hit, and that would still be true even if it turned out to be about Jar Jar Binks and the Little Mermaid going on an underwater quest for the essence of Gangnam Style. It’s the Citibank of movies, literally too big to fail. But Abrams has grander ambitions than a Michael Bay-style cash grab. His mission is to build a new “Star Wars” franchise on top of the old one, and the ultimate success of that venture will largely depend on how the series’ millions of fans react to the fact that he hasn’t just made a movie fueled by nostalgia, or a movie full of mythic echoes. He’s made a movie they’ve already seen, a simulacrum of something that was already a simulacrum of something else.

For better or worse — and here’s where my hoodie-wearing friend’s thought experiment comes in – “The Force Awakens” is more like a remake or a mashup of the first two “Star Wars” pictures than a sequel. Yes, in technical terms Abrams and co-writers Lawrence Kasdan and Michael Arndt are picking up the narrative some 30 years after the destruction of the Galactic Empire at the end of “Return of the Jedi.” But they barely even pretend to advance the story of the initial trilogy; they rewind it and repeat it, with new characters substituting for old ones but many of the same action set-pieces, narrative dilemmas and hidden connections.

    😆

Since this is the spoilers thread is there a synopsis up yet? I’m not going to waste my time on reviews but I’m curious (in a rubbernecking a RTA way) to know what the ‘plot’ is.

And don’t worry it’s not Coruscant.

And the Republics fleet is also destroyed at the same time so now there’s only a small resistance left. You see what they did there it’s just like in ANH now.

They JJed it. It’s actually managing to sound *worse* than I was expecting, and you know how painfully low my expectations were!

Now I must just block it all out until that full synopsis turns up because the headlines of the gushing reviews are too annoying. The reality distortion field is strong with this one.

Brent Friedman Clone Wars writer gave it a 7.5

Sounds like the JJ Star Trek movies. Fine as an action-sci-fi-popcorn movie with with pretty CGI. According to Bro who watched them the first one was OK as long as you viewed it as an alternate reality, whereas the second was all kinds of bad. The third sounds like a total train wreck.

The problem is I have a low tolerance for mindless action without a plot. I’m too much of a bookworm. I don’t mind suspending disbelief as long as the story is strong. Flashy FX and ‘plosions come a long way down my list of requirements which is why JJ just doesn’t rock my boat.

So Kylo Ren is Ben Solo (oooooo Kylo / Solo, what a shocker, no clue in the name there!) and he kills Han? Well I’m sure Ford is more than happy to take his pay cheque and not have to come back.

OK it’s a diss on the PT but “Jar Jar Abrams”? 😆

http://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/dec/17/star-wars-the-force-awakens-han-solo-plot-holes-and-family-connections-discuss-the-film-with-spoilers comments are a lot more balanced than I’ve seen elsewhere, probably because it’s not a ‘geek site’.

I like how the article trots out the CGI cliché and in the next paragraph talks about the CG characters  😆

So yeah pretty much what I expected Star Wars: The Fan Service Awakens

So Lucas gets all kinds of crap for Death Star 2 but Death Star 3 is the second coming.

Makes me miss The Clone Wars that much more.

They weren’t even trying were they? They decided that what “the fans want” is the OT again with new actors and modern CGI (while of course denouncing CGI).

And then Fin and Han infiltrate the weapon-built-into-the-planet to rescue the girl, like in A New Hope. Although Rey actively rescues herself, so that was different.

And they have to destroy the energy field before they can attack the planet like in Return of the Jedi.

We thought they would continue the trend for every movie to top the previous ones with a cooler lightsaber fight, but they did not. Instead, the lightsaber combatants mostly look like they’ve never used a lightsaber before, making The Empire Strikes Back duel between Luke and Vader look polished and professional.

They also did NOT make Kylo a Vader ripoff. Vader is always imposing, always seems on top of things, always scary looking, always scary sounding. Kylo without his mask is not particularly evil looking, or particularly handsome, or particularly intimidating, and his voice is not scary at all. Vader calmly kills his own men when he is disappointed, Kylo destroys nearby equipment in a sort of temper tantrum. In fact, Kylo comes across as weirdly wimpy for a villain.

Also, Rey must be the most powerful Force user ever, more so than Anakin. She has ABSOLUTELY NO TRAINING WHATSOEVER in the movie and yet achieves Force abilities it took Luke two or three movies to learn; she grabs a lightsaber with The Force, and she does one heck of a jedi mind trick.

I just watched it and I liked it. I agree that it shared some things with the OT but so did the prequels. Rey is going on the same hero’s journey that both Anakin and Luke went on in their respective trilogies.

It had some common themes but it also did its own thing. Maz Kanata was great, Rey’s flashback scene was awesome and Han and Leia were great too. I loved Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron and I’m looking forward to see them again.

As for Kylo, I’m glad they did what they did with him. How he’s not that powerful. Heck, it’s even discussed in the movie. Rey tells him that he’s afraid of not being as strong as Vader. And he isn’t. He’s just a young apprentice who hasn’t even finished his training (in both the Jedi and Sith ways) and expects so much from himself. He starts off as powerful, but that’s only when he’s wearing his mask. When he removes his mask and we see his face, it symbolizes his innocence and his weakness. He’s only tough covered up, but when he isn’t protected, he loses.

As for Rey being powerful, remember that she’s probably Luke’s daughter and the granddaughter of Anakin Skywalker. Powerful blood flows in her veins. Plus, her abilities aren’t that great; she only successfully uses the Jedi mind trick after the third try. And she grabs the lightsaber because she used her emotions (upon seeing Finn fall).

Han’s death was sad. His scenes with Leia were great, too.

I LOVED Maz Kanata. She’s so cute.

Snoke was weird though. I don’t know how I feel about him. Didn’t seem Star Wars-y.

My biggest complaint is what they did with Phasma. Perhaps I expected too much from her, but in my defense, they DID hype her up as an empowered military woman who was a force to be reckoned with. And she didn’t do anything. She didn’t get any battle scenes and she became a joke in the end. I even bought a poster of her. Brienne of Tarth would be disappointed.

As for the lightsaber duels being unpolished, that’s the point. How weird would it have been if Rey and Finn fought with their blades professionally? They haven’t gotten any training in the art of lightsaber combat. Perhaps they have some melee skills, but lightsaber combat is an art.

Ok like I predicted this movie is tied for 2nd I think. ESB still reigns supreme and I believe I’d put this one with ANH. Better then all the prequels for sure IMO. One big difference I noticed is that the fighting actually felt REAL, it wasn’t perfect choreography like in the episode 1 Maul fights or the Anakin vs Obi-Wan duel.

I really like Kylo, you could tell he’s very strong in the force. He’s got lots of raw potential being able to see into people’s minds and stopping that blast like that. However I just don’t think he ever had any real training he just sort of taught himself and Snoke over estimated his ability. I was right with Kylo being related to Vader, that was pretty obvious. He has potential to rival Vader but I’m not sure he will.

I actually liked his face though, some where saying it doesn’t look evil enough but I think it shows that he’s still a normal human under the mask and his confrontation with Han showed that a lot. Han’s death was expected but it fits in with the whole mentor always dying in every trilogy and they made his death perfect IMO, I don’t think Han wasn’t expecting to die though but I do think that showed that Kylo still is a good guy even the slightest bit.

Finn and Poe where pretty funny though but Han was the best, “Sanitation!!” Lol probably my favourite conversation.

Phasma was pretty useless, kind of hope she just died. Hux was pretty cool SIEG HEIL haha.

Snoke would be kind of cool if he is Plagueis. I mean Plageuis < Palpatine < Vader < Luke/ Leia < Kylo/ Rey

I actually love what they did though, it’s like they put all the originals in one with their own stuff added in to start this trilogy, I suspect the next two films will be very different.

Kylo is also Skywalker blood, which makes that pretty cool.

I think Kylo could have beat Rey though, he 1) under estimated her big time and 2) had numerous injuries, that Chewbacca shot was a very big one. Still Kylo is just raw potential waiting to be unleashed, he never had any real training.

Also the unpolished fights where the best part, it’s a lot more realistic

I don’t think Rey just picked all that stuff up instantly though Sibs, I think something happended to her from that vision with the lightsaber in the box. Like Luke triggered it only for her which filled her mind with lots of random knowledge she never knew she had.

When Kylo reached into her mind she probably felt a connection as well and picked up on some stuff he knew.

It’s weird but there’s something along those lines for sure, she didn’t just become powerful like that instantly.

Also this is the fourth day this has been out and well, it was packed haha. We got there early in the line thankfully and had great seats, middle in the back.

There was 14 showings yesterday and 16 today. They’re using 4/10 auditoriums at our theatre for this movie
