Now first I’d like to say that I am playing on console, Xbox One to be specific and that a console analysis of the game vs PC could be totally different. PC is often not the main focus for shooter games and usually gets ported over after they finished the console design, this however can lead to extensive bugs on PC versions due to the lack of attention it is given (Eg Battlefield 4, Several past Call of Duty games). The point is if you’re a console gamer and see reviews about PC bugs of a certain game just keep in mind that those complaints probably won’t apply to you majority of the time. Now on to my actual thoughts…

    Pre-thoughts on Battlefront and EA:

I’ll admit I came into this beta with very high hopes for Battlefront and for the Star Wars video game franchise to finally get back on its feet and become what it once was (2000-2008 was the glory days for Star Wars video Games). I am an avid supporter of EA taking over the reigns knowing the potential that can be reached with the resources they have at their disposal. And I can certainly say that my faith has not been diminished one bit from what I have witnessed today (I have actually been playing the beta for about 5-6 hours). However I do think I should lower expectations just a bit.

The Game Modes and Survival Thoughts:

The beta consists of two multiplayer maps, two game modes and one fraction of a survival mission. The survival mission is based on Tatooine however despite the amazing graphics, visual effects (explosions, dust, etc) and detail put into the map I just don’t feel any importance when playing it. Sure I took the time to explore (it’s a very big map) and the work and effort can certainly be appreciated however the size of the map also is its biggest letdown. I mean to be honest how boring is it to have your first objective being “Eliminate 6 enemies” on a huge map? This objective is perfectly fine to start off with but it will take you much more time and effort just finding the enemies then it will to kill them. Also from what I could tell there really isn’t much variation in the waves, it’s basically just kill enemies and sometimes you will defend an escape pod but actually don’t need to defend that escape pod to win the round, you can ignore it entirely and be perfectly fine however if you do choose to defend it you will get some extra items that won’t really make a difference if you win or lose. The positives are that there is variation in enemies, different types will show up and make it a bit more challenging and unique but it doesn’t change it by that much difficulty wise if you know what you’re doing.

Judging survival mode in a negative way however probably isn’t justified so far, after all it was only 6/15 waves but the concept I saw of basically the same objective every time (able to ignore all secondary objectives without much penalty) is sort of boring. However the best part was Admiral Ackbar talking to you ๐Ÿ˜€ .

On to multiplayer with the first example of Dropzone on Sullust. Dropzone is an 8 vs 8 game mode where your goal is basically to control and defend escape pods that land on the map for a certain amount of time, whoever is in control when that escape pods time is up will get the point, whoever has the most points at the end wins the game. A simple but fun game mode meant for a more close up battle that I have a feeling won’t be that common in this game. The second map and game mode is Walker Assault on Hoth, if you ever played Battlefield then this game mode is similar to Rush. One team (The Empire) needs to defend their walkers as they advance through the zones while the other team (Rebels) needs to hit the uplink spots to call in Y-Wing bombimg runs to weaken the AT AT’s so the Rebels can damage the enemy walkers and destroy them. This game mode is 20 vs 20 and is meant to be an extensive fast paced conflict.

    Gameplay Thoughts:

Many would expect this game to be similar to Battlefield due to the developers however I do not feel much of a battlefield resemblance here instead it seems to play a bit more like Halo but most of all it is sort of a unique game. The game is pretty balanced in almost every aspect, the guns are not overpowered in fact they all operate in a fairly similar manner in which they all vent heat rather then reload and they also can’t be customized with attachments that many people won’t have. The abilities work off a cool down system which I don’t think I have ever seen in a shooter like this before. Basically instead of only being able to carry a few grenades with you, you can have as much as you like however you can only use that ability every 9 seconds (In the case of Thermal Detonator) and you also can only carry three items into battle with you, these items are cards that can be purchased with credits from levelling up and by being at the right level in order to purchase them. The cards in the beta are fairly limited however jump pack is most certainly my personal favourite, it’s great fun to be able to jump a large distance and get behind someone in a very quick manner.

You can also find bonus cards on the map consisting from Hero pickups, vehicle pickups and weapon pickups. Weapon pickups mainly consist of grenades, shields and orbital strikes which can do a devastating amount of damage. Vehicles can be X-wings, A-wings, Tie Fighters, Snow Speeders or AT-STs. AT ST is sort of similar to being a foot soldier and is easy to get the hang over however flying takes some getting used to. At first flying any vehicle at all is pretty clunky and you will most likely end up crashing your first few times but when you get your head around the concept it really isn’t that bad. My personal flying adventures usually result in myself going kamikaze into enemy and sometimes friendly soldiers though, however snow speeders can certainly be fun with the prospect of being able to use harpoons on AT-ATs to win the game for your team. Finally we come to Heroes and this is actually one of the biggest questions I had is how are they going to balance heroes? Well it certainly isn’t like Battlefront 2 where the best player can just become a hero and kill 50 guys without effort instead being a hero in the new Battlefront is a lot harder, in fact you can actually die very quickly if not paying attention or get attacked by lots of guys. There’s a good mix of balance to the game while still being fun for the side being the hero and the side attacking the hero, working as a team to bring him down. However I haven’t had the chance to personally square off against another hero, I have witnessed it happen and it seems neat enough.

    Additional Thoughts:

My biggest complaint is the unbalance in Walker Assault, not that one side is unbalanced in terms of weapons or anything but the objectives pretty much make it impossible for the Rebels to win. The Empire gets two AT-ATs that are always indestructible unless the Rebels can successfully activate and defend the uplinks (which the Empire can disable as well) and also do a significant amount of damage to these powerful walkers with for the most part just basic weapons, in the third phase the Rebels do have snow speeders but that ain’t all that reliable believe me when I have found it difficult to harpoon AT-ATs for multiple passes. However the game mode is still fun just I’m not sure how long that will last in the real game if you’re pretty much guaranteed a loss as the Rebels.

One thing I really like is the Hoth map shown though, it has 3 sections to it and changes to the next as the game advances. The first is just out in hills and rough terrain, the second is again a bit outside but the main focus is the base and the third is all out trench warfare with air vehicles, AT-ATs, orbital strikes, turrets, etc setting everything up for a fast paced and intense conclusion (Even though the Empire usually wins, I have seen the Rebels come very close multiple times but TBH I never seen them win, my friend says he has once though). I am most looking forward to more maps like this in the full game.

Not sure this needed to be said but the soundtrack is great as it is in all Star Wars content. The audio effects and voices are also very well done.

The cinematics that are played at the start of each survival game, different multiplayer maps and different game modes are certainly welcoming and helps immerse yourself into the situation better. Also I enjoy the hero intro cinematic that you are shown if you become a hero.

Graphics are some of the best in Xbox One and the models are all great. I remember the developers were showing off their original models they would be using and I must say they are certainly quite impressive.

The game plays strong in first person, never tried third person much but I am more of a first person guy myself.

    Conclusion:

Overall from what I have played so far, Battlefront is both a fun and unique game where it can be repetitive at times and predictable I feel the real game will certainly be able to make up for this with 10 more additional maps (Counting Jakku) and 7 more additional game modes plus more survival games that are actually complete, but so far I am not holding survival to high expectations now.

Star Wars Battlefront is a great game for people like me who love to immerse themselves into the limitless Star Wars universe, from what I have witnessed so far this will certainly be one of the games to get this year and at the very least a satisfactory start to a new era of Star Wars games.

    Final Verdict
    8.5/10

    Pros:
    – Unique Gameplay: (Cooldown system in a shooter, card system where you can only take 3 items other then your blaster, heroes, able to find additional cards on map, vehicles ,etc all mixed into one)

    – Hoth: Excellent map that’s doesn’t get boring or old due to it changing (at least in Walker Assault mode). From what I experienced it’s always a fast and intense pace being played at, always something shooting at you.

    – Graphics/ Soundtrack/ Cinematic’s: All some of the best on the Xbox One, absolutely flawless.

    Cons:

    – Survival is sort of repetitive and can get boring however this is only a small sample seen here today where my expectations have been lowered I still am going to be optimistic.

    – Walker Assault is unbalanced in terms of objectives, a bit too difficult for Rebels to win.

    – Flying can be hard to get the hang of and can still be hard to do well with even after awhile.

    – Stormtroopers can actually aim and even hit shit… So unrealistic… Jk ๐Ÿ˜›

i hope to get the beta, i watched a live stream and the rebels won. I think it’ll be better once people learn how to win as rebels, instead of just playing around like most probably are now.

Well it’s more fun to play as The Rebels due to the whole epic idea of holding the line but it’s just really hard to win unless everyone can coordinate together. Also when more items are added to use in real game like rocket launchers then yeah I guess it will be easier to destroy the AT ATs

rocket launchers arent in the beta? there’s your problem xD I saw the ATSTs ripping through the rebels on one round and I was wondering why nobody nearby had a rocket.

Well it’s only a chance to get one from weapons spawns on map, there is like a ion torpedo and ion grenades but honestly they don’t do that much again the AT-AT

I played a bit yesterday but probably won’t get another chance until maybe Monday before the beta is taken down.

I liked it. I played through the survival and survived on my second try though it took forever to figure out how to kill the AT-ST. Drop zone was fun too even though I suck and constantly get killed and rank last or second to last on my team :P.
Didnt play any Walker Assault so hopefully I’ll have time Monday before it disappears.

The graphics aren’t up to the PS2 standards though ๐Ÿ˜›

What are you playing on? Because all my friends think the graphics are some of the best on Xbox One.

Yeah it’s better on survival to use the second kit with the ion torpedo so you can take the vehicles out.

Just kidding the graphics are great. I’m on PS4.

I got an ion powerup of some kind on my second try. Made it much easier.

Yeah I saw the Rebels win yesterday as well. It’s rare but happens and they often come sort of close

I think rebels are winning about 40-60 now that people are getting the hang of it.

“Weโ€™re also excited to announce the Star Wars Battlefront Season Pass*, which extends the game with four expansion packs coming at a later date, filled with new content that will take you to new locations across a galaxy far, far away. Star Wars Battlefront Season Pass owners will also secure two-week early access to each expansion pack and an exclusive โ€œShoot Firstโ€ emote.

In addition to the Star Wars Battlefront Season Pass, today we are also ready to reveal the Star Wars Battlefront Ultimate Edition which includes all the content available in the Star Wars Battlefront Deluxe Edition as well as the Star Wars Battlefront Season Pass.”

I can imagine one DLC will be Sequel oriented, maybe another OT one adding Yavin IV and Bespin or even Death Star. Wonder what the other ones will be like. I was sort of thinking a prequel DLC but now that I think of it, they would have to design all new models and everything that it seems sort of unlikely, given they did take a lot of time using real models and locations and stuff.

I tried Walker assault…I still suck ๐Ÿ™‚ I have no idea how people get 40+ kills in one game…But they do have a lot more powerups than me.

    I average 15-20 with a single AT-ST lol

i think that it’ll just be OT for this game. Still should make Bespin and Yavin IV. A Star Destroyer interior would be good for Cargo and some of the other game modes.

My best run was like 4 kills
And I haven’t been in any vehicle yet.

Nah it will have sequels for sure, I think they may already have the new Stormtroopers on the free Jakku maps in December.

But 4 paid DLC. Usually Dice DLC is 4 maps so perhaps we can say they will likely have two plants per DLC (two maps each). That’s 8 planets they will likely add, unless they add some existing plant maps as well but I only see Tatooine as a viable option since it’s likely they may be missing something.

Anyways Yavin IV, Bespin and some sequel planets seem like obvious choices. Perhaps a space DLC?? With like a cruiser assault could be kind of cool, DICE often actually adds a new game mode with every DLC, Capture the Flag is likely to be one.

Prequel maps could be possible they won’t add droids, clones and everything though

I guess they could add more maps not seen in the movies like Sullust (even though it’s mentioned in ROTJ). That would be kind of cool and I would be down for it.

I’d even be down for Lothal ๐Ÿ˜› Kanan vs Inquisitor. It’s really the best opportunity if you want a city like map which other shooters often utilize.

    In movies: Bespin, Yavin IV
    Mentioned: Kessel, Dantooine, Correllia
Other good choices for OT content: Chandrilla, Mon Cala, Coruscant, Naboo, Mustafar

Rebels locations are welcome. I want a map inside a Star Destroyer.

Don’t think they would do Corellia if they could just do Coruscant. Naboo is eww lol

Mustafar would be cool so would Kessel. I hope one DLC adds real space battles, capital ships and stuff

    Space Endor probably.

Really? dislike Naboo? I would like a bigger Theed map, let us roam the palace and streets and the hangar. Give a chance for them to use their photo-technique on the Naboo fighters and speeders, and let the rebels use them on that map.

It could be cool but I just always disliked Naboo, it was pretty boring in the movies and stuff.

Geonosis would be a much better map I think, a chance for the Rebels too use some old Republic tech and the Empire just uses normal stuff

Naboo can have at least 3 maps. Palace/city/Hangar (all connected), the grassland and forrest area, and a smaller map in the reactor core rooms would be interesting.

I think DLC planets will have only two maps for the most part. Idk I just don’t like Naboo that much lol.

Geonosis, Kamino, Mustafar, Utapau and Coruscsnt are the prequels locations I’d be interested in

I swear they better not make a frickin Dagobah. it has no place as a battleground.

What about Kashyyyk? I’d be interested in that, especially if they incorporated the giant tree villages more.

Idk I thought about it but I think that place would be a bit weird with no CIS and Republic, Utapau may be out of place as well.

I think they will at least have sequel factions but we will see when the free Jakku comes out

Kashyyyk would feel out of place? nah. It would make sense. Also give a good place to have Chewbacca be a hero if they were to add him.

Jakku is Empire vs Rebels. you can tell because of concept art and the Dice team says they are sticking with this era.
