Oh yeah, forgot that SoD was in between the two halves of Dark Disciple. That means Vos fought Maul while he was under Dooku.

I read it as what it was, an adaptation of a bunch of episode scripts, which would have had the usual weaknesses that we came to expect in TCW (e.g. too much Anakin when he really wasn’t needed). The romance was a little heavy handed but Ventress’ death, well it was what I’d been expecting for YEARS. Her character arc took her from standard villain to a final redemption and a heroic death. If it had been a stand alone novel rather than what it was I’d have had a ton of problems with the plot and the character development, but as it was it was fine.

I’m glad that Ventress died a hero and that she returned to her sisters on Dathomir. The last words of the book still give me a sad, bittersweet feeling (exactly how I felt with Ahsoka leaving) but I just wish her death was for someone more relevant than Vos. Throughout the book he’s an asshole, and then what? What does he do in the future that is so important that Ventress has to die for it? IDK. Which is why Obi-Wan makes a lot more sense. Someone we all know and love and who is extremely important to the galaxy.
Ventress’ death saved Quinlan Vos, who was a traitor that killed his best friend. Or her death could have saved Obi-Wan and subsequently, the galaxy.

I’m still proud she went out like that, though. Put someone else’s life over hers, which shows how much she has changed.

If she’d died for someone significant then in a way it would have been about them. As it was it was about her.

    True, true..
Now I’m just curious about where Vos’ story goes.

I found myself more interested in the subplot of the Jedi and how the war had changed them and in reality it became their undoing.
Question: After reading this and seeing the season 6 Yoda arc do you think they as in Filoni and crew were laying a foundation where in Yoda and Obi-Wan were making preparations in case the war was lost? They both seem to come to realize in their own way that they may not prevail.

Oh gosh, that would’ve been amazing. Or just even a small discussion about the loss of the Order between the two as the series ends.
Yoda has his realization about the failing state of the Jedi Order during the Yoda arc, and Obi-Wan gets his realization when Ventress is killed. And these two are the surviving Jedi after ROTS. In no way was this a coincidence.

I finished reading it yesterday. Not bad, kept my attention start to finish and there were a lot of great moments. Romance was quite heavy handed and I’m sort of left wondering where Vos goes from here, but considering Disney’s insistence on hovering around the OT and the new films, that’ll take a while. Overall I liked it. Not perfect and may have been better on screen, but still Ventress’ story came to a really fitting end in my opinion. Actually, thinking about it, maybe Obi-Wan should’ve been in Vos’ place. However, considering the plot, I’d just think it’s out of character for one of the most by the book Jedi of all time.

Exactly. Obi-Wan would have made for a much more interesting novel. And it would’ve toned down the romance (which wasn’t a good thing in the novel anyway) plus Ventress’ sacrifice would have been stronger because Obi-Wan is a very important being in the galaxy. Vos… isn’t.

Finished it. It was ok but it has some problems that you’ve pretty much covered ontje previous pages.
I wasn’t a huge fan of Windu’s portrayal all the time. I get he’s a bit darker in his methods than Yoda but sometimes he seemed a bit too aggressive.
Vos was a mess. All his constantly changing sides and refusing to tell anyone what was happening. And the Ventress we know would have destroyed Dooku when she had the chance.
Of course Anakin was useless and should have been replaced by another Jedi. Like why not use Tiplee could have been a fun change instead of just killing her off in a stupid death in SOD.
And why doesn’t the Council just send Mace to kill Dooku. He wouldn’t stand a chance. They could do an arc with him tracking Dooku and obviously outmatching him and then let Dooku off on some lucky accident. That would be way more interesting than another Anakin vs Dooku.

Let Mace after Dooku, let Mace AND Obi-Wan after Dooku… it would have worked. But then again they’re the Generals of the Republic so I’m sure plot-wise it can be explained that they don’t do missions like that. (Stupid, I know, but what other explanation is there?)

“Vos was a mess.” Yes, an annoying, stupid, selfish, mess. And Ventress sacrificed herself for him, which is sad considering she’s worth so much more than he is.

I don’t even want to say he was stupid because I just really didn’t like how he used. He fell to the Dark Side to quickly andall the secrets were stupid. And I don’t care how much he wanted to get Sidious. I refuse to believe he’d kill a bunch of clones as well as two Jedi, one of them being his best friend to get to him.

He completely lost himself way too quickly.

And he brought Dooku along on Asajj’s ship – I highly doubt the Asajj we know and love would have allowed that to happen. The characterization was weak and random.
