Some of the plot seems to be about River realizing that the man is the Doctor, but I hope they get that out of the way quickly. I want them to know who they are for most of the episode, it would be more entertaining that way.

As unsure as I am about this episode this trailer does look very good:

There will be no Clara and at this point that is looking like a BIG selling point to me.

I am very excited for this. It looks like a simpler, light-hearted story with the Doctor and River at centre. I prefer the lighter Christmas specials than the important ones (The Time of the Doctor, The End of Time) so this looks perfect.

plus river is going to fix this mess

We enjoyed it! Brother had his doubts beforehand because he’s not fond of River, but we both thought it was fun and sweet. The only one who didn’t like it was our Dad, who seemed extremely confused by the continuity, but then, about half the time he thinks River is the daughter of Amy and the Eleventh Doctor, so…

I liked it too. It had a small, simple, and fun story and didn’t try to do anything extravagant. It was also quite funny throughout the whole episode and the ending made it emotional – but not too much of a cry-fest, y’know? I’m so glad we got to see the Doctor give River the screwdriver and the singing towers were sweet.
Probably one of my favourite Christmas specials and certainly better than much of Series 9. Let’s hope Series 10 comes back with a great companion.

AND if this is indeed Moffat’s last episode (which I hope it is) it would be a good ending for him. He got to completely end the River Song story, which was by far the best part of his run as showrunner.
I guess it makes sense that we won’t see River again. She’s seen all of the Doctor’s past faces, and her journal is almost over, and her next stop is the Library. The only way for us to see River again is if the Doctor saves her from the hard drive and things between them could actually be chronological from there.

I think this one makes it clear that she hasn’t encountered this, or any later regeneration earlier in her time line so that’s really got to be it. Although Alex Kingston looks just about the same as she did 7 years ago there’s only so long she can keep coming back and not look older. I think this really must be the last TV story for River.

Yes, and it was a sweet ending, so I’m not too sad to see her go. She ended on a high note. (unlike a certain someone)

While I wasn’t overly fond of how the majority of this episode was executed, I did enjoy the interplay between Twelve and River and it’s a nice way to definitive bring an end to their adventures as doing so was always going to be a challenge given that the start of her story from the Doctor’s and out point of view was the end from her’s (with a little epilogue at the end of Name of the Doctor). I think it’s safe to say we won’t see her on TV again now as this pretty much wraps everything up nicely for her. I now look forward to seeing what Big Finish do with her character now that they have about 200 years of adventures worth to fill.

Apparently Moffat wrote this intending for it to be his last one (and that kind of comes across) but the BBC couldn’t find another showrunner so Moffat will now be heading up series ten apparently. Since it seems he’s ready to leave though it’ll probably mean series ten will be his last as it shouldn’t take too long to find a new showrunner. Maybe have a coalition of two or three showrunners if they don’t feel that one individual is up for the task. I feel it’d be good for the show to have two or three people running it as it’ll decrease the workload and hopefully increase the creativity with ideas bouncing off more than one person.

I like the idea of having multiple showrunners, but I just want Moffat to stop with his bad ideas. Series 9 had the potential to be great but then the ending was just a disappointment. Whereas with Series 8, it was the opposite – the series was disappointing mostly and then it had an amazing finale. No consistency.
Apparently Peter Capaldi said Series 10 would be his last season as well, which makes sense given that Tennant and Matt Smith both had three series as well. But it’s sad to have such a great Doctor as Capaldi leave after such weak seasons…

I’m so glad he got to give her the screwdriver. I was waiting for that for a very long time.

No 🙁 he hasn’t had enough good material.

It feels like Capaldi’s barely begun, I don’t want him to leave just yet. Also, while Tennant and Smith did get three series they ended up getting four years because of the specials and the series splits. Although I personally haven’t heard that rumour anywhere so I’m hoping someone just made it up on the basis of Tennant and Smith’s three series runs.

And as Firebird says, Capaldi really hasn’t had enough good material. The only Capaldi episodes I ever have any urge to go back and rewatch are Mummy on the Orient Express and Flatline. Under the Lake was also spectacular but I lack the urge to go back to that one because Before the Flood let me down.

For once I’m not excited to watch a regeneration scene. I want him to stay. Gah, he had the potential to be one of the best – he was going to save Gallifrey…. and then eh happened.
