Concept Art and Trivia
Clone pilots Hawk and Odd Ball underwent redesigns for this episode, though they are not clearly seen in the final.
As tribute to the young Twi’lek girl he met on Ryloth in “Innocents of Ryloth,” Waxer has a cartoon of Numa on his helmet.
A detailed wedge of Umbara arc landscape was designed in this illustration by Tara Rueping. It tracks the progress of Krell’s 501st across the fens, ridge and hills seen in Episode 325 (“Darkness on Umbara”), through the steep grade of Episode 326 (“the General”) and includes the airbase perimeter in Episode 402 (“The General”). Note that these are production numbers, not air numbers.
An entire Umbara alphabet was designed for use in these episodes. Illustration by Chris Glenn.
Pong Krell lightsaber design introduces something new to the Jedi arsenal. Though double-ended lightsabers had been seen before — most famously wielded by Darth Maul — Krell’s are hinged, allowing him to more easily stow them on his belt.
Using Waxer with Numa on his helmet was a way to really drive home the horror of what Krell did to the two units when you see the little cartoon of her it reminds you of how she called Waxer and Boil “nara” which as Obi-Wan says “It means brother” It drives home the point that the men not clones as Rex said regard each other as brothers.
Yah, you’re right. He didn’t make soldiers kill each other. He made brothers kill each other.
This was, by far, my favorite episode in all of TCW. It a nice feel of Order 66 to it and this episode was one of the saddest. Krell made the Clones kill each other. Their brothers. And that’s horrible. And when Waxer died, I’m not gonna lie, I almost shed a tear there myself. Regardless, Krell has to be in my top 3 list of favorite TCW villains. I think they should have let him escape. It would have made for a good arc. But I also don’t think they should have killed him. Death seemed too easy of an escape for him. I would have tortured him.
The only problem I had with this episode was the ending. I would’ve preferred it if Krell was eaten by the Sarlacc, or Anakin came out of no where and slew him. Dogma just shooting him just didn’t really flow.
